I say it every year: new year…
Same. Me.
Not what you expected, right? Why TF would I want to stay the same? Because I’ve decided that “goal-chasing” is part of my identity. So why the heck wouldn’t I want to be that same me?
I set regular goals, year-round. I don’t wait for specific milestones or calendar dates. I’m not the “I’ll start on Monday” type.
It works for me, and it can work for you too.
We humans assign a lot of value to our identities, which can either hurt us or help us. Our limiting beliefs are what hurt us. These are the tiny voices in our minds telling us we aren’t good enough, capable enough, etc. They sometimes pop up in less obvious ways, making them harder to catch. For example:
“I’m not a morning person.” “I like food too much to train for a marathon.”
Limiting beliefs such as these are harder to catch, since they aren’t a flat out “I can’t” statement. But we lean into these and allow them to become part of our identities subconsciously. They get in the way of achieving our goals and doing things that make ourselves happy.
With years of practice (but still an ongoing journey to be quite honest) I’ve become more aware of when limiting beliefs pop up. I catch them in the act and I shut them down. I’ve trained myself to replace them with converse statements, reminding myself of my abilities. I’ve decided that I am an ongoing project, that every moment is a delightful moment to be a better version of myself.
So I set regular goals, and I regularly crush them. And it’s because I’ve assigned it to my identity.
“I am always improving.” “I learn from my mistakes and always make better choices.”
The narratives you tell yourself, you speak into existence. So I don’t need a specific date. I don’t need a milestone. I don’t need a New Year’s Resolution. I practice daily excellence, focusing on the small steps and habits I need to achieve the big goals.
Each moment is an opportunity to make a better choice, do start fresh, to be a better you. You’re on a perpetual journey to excellence. And when you live by these ideologies, why wouldn’t you want to be the same you? The same you, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 and beyond.
